In New Testament times, an apology wasn’t about saying “I’m
sorry,” but referred to a well-reasoned reply that provided
compelling evidence.
The word apologetics comes from the Greek term ἀπολογία
(apologia), meaning a reasoned defense.
In 1 Peter 3:15, Christians are encouraged to be “prepared to
make a defense” (apologia) for the hope we have, sharing our faith
with gentleness and respect (ESV).
This Greek word, in various forms, is also found in Acts 22:1,
Acts 25:16, 1 Corinthians 9:3, 2 Corinthians 7:11, Philippians
1:7, Philippians 1:16, and 2 Timothy 4:16.
